Godello
Godello is one of the most important white varieties of the northwest of Spain. Indigenous white grape of Galicia (Valdeorras) and Bierzo (where it’s believe to originate from around the 12th century), it’s also grown in Portugal. After fermentation, the juices are usually very aromatic with a rather high acidity. Wines produced with Godello are delicate, elegant and crisp with a rather sweet mouthfeel. The colour is rather pale and the main aromas are fruity (citrus and apple). They have a worldwide recognition for their ageing capacity (bottle ageing as well as oak ageing). It’s an early budding variety and therefore suffers from late frosts in spring. Vigorous and highly productive, it allows severe pruning. It is sensitive to powdery mildew, excoriosis and vascular fungus, but less to downy mildew and botrytis.
